Sunday light is lying across the floorboards, and nobody has asked anything of you yet. Stay in that stillness a moment. Today's verse is a person shaking themselves awake on purpose, the way a child does on a holiday morning.
"Awake up, my glory; awake, psaltery and harp: I myself will awake early." — Psalm 57:8 (KJV)
This morning's prayer Lord, I'm awake, and I'm glad of it. Wake the best part of me too, the part that sleeps under worry and old to-do lists. Call it up the way a child gets called on a holiday: come on, come see. Let my hands remember how to clap. Let my voice remember it was made to carry a tune toward you. I don't need to feel grand this morning. I only need to be awake and willing. Take what small music I have and make it enough. Be glad with me over bread, over light, over the people sleeping down the hall. I'm up early to meet you, and I think you were smiling before I arrived. Amen.
Today, on purpose:
Sing one verse out loud before checking my phone.
Greet the first person I see with real warmth.
Give thanks for one ordinary thing at church today.
