The dishwasher has finished its grumbling, and the phone lies face-down on the table. The list on the counter can curl at its corners until morning. Whatever you left undone is only paper tonight.
"Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life." — Psalm 42:8 (KJV)
Tonight's prayer Lord, all day your kindness met me at the door. It was the warm cup, the green light, the friend who called when I needed her. Now the dark has come, and out in the grass the crickets are singing, small and steady, as though you asked them to. I think you did. Sing over me what I am too tired to remember. Let my last words be a prayer to you, the God of my life, who has never once lost track of me. I hand you the unfinished things and the people I love. I am safe. I am held. Thank you for today, and for a song that does not stop when I do. Amen.
Blessing for your rest Goodnight, dear one. May the Lord's song find you in your sleep, and keep watch over every room and every sleeper under your roof.
