The dishes are stacked, and the phone has finally gone dark. Whatever you didn't answer, didn't fold, or didn't finish will keep its place until morning. Let your shoulders drop the way they do when you step off a hot road into the shade of a big tree.
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." — Psalm 91:1 (KJV)
Tonight's prayer Father, I have been out in the sun all day, and I am tired in the good way and the other way too. Thank you for the secret place, where no one is counting my steps. I come in beside you now, and the air turns cool. Your shadow is wide enough for me and for everyone I love. I leave my shoes at the edge of it. I leave the unanswered messages, the cupboard door still open, the sentence I wish I'd said better. You hold them lightly. I think you are smiling. Thank you for this shade, this breath, this bed, and for you, my dwelling place. Amen.
Blessing for your rest May the shade of the Almighty lie cool across your pillow, and across every sleeping head under your roof. Goodnight, dear one. Dream wide, and wake glad.
