Hum the Old Song Into the Dark

🕊 Let Providence read it to you

The dishwasher has finished its rumble, and your phone lies face down on the nightstand. The unanswered messages, the half-folded laundry, the sentence you wish you'd said better: they will all keep until daylight. Pull the blanket to your chin and let the house tick and settle around you.

"When I remember thee upon my bed, and meditate on thee in the night watches."
— Psalm 63:6 (KJV)
Tonight's prayer
Lord, I am in bed, and the day is shut behind me like a gate. Now I remember you, the way I remember a song my mother used to hum. The kitchen table where you met me. The hard phone call you carried me through. The small mercies I almost missed: a warm cup, a kind word, a green light. I won't hurry these thoughts. I will turn them over slowly while the night watches pass. Be the last name on my lips and the first one I reach for at dawn. Thank you for every good thing you have done, and for being near enough to hear me whisper. Amen.
Blessing for your rest
May the Lord give you sweet remembering and deep, unbroken sleep. May he rest over every person breathing quietly in your home tonight.

Have Providence read you to sleep
