The dishwasher has finished its slow churn, and the phone lies face down on the table. The laundry can stay in its basket. The list on the fridge will still be there at sunrise, and it will look smaller in the light.
"Yet the LORD will command his lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life." — Psalm 42:8 (KJV)
Tonight's prayer Lord, you are the God of my life, and you know every room of it. You know the kitchen with its crumbs and the car with its coffee cups. You know the hours I hurried through, and you were in each one. Now the house is quiet, and I can almost hear you humming under the dark. Walk through me room by room and turn down whatever is still burning. Let the song you keep for the night be the last thing I hear. Watch over the ones sleeping down the hall. Thank you for the day's small kindnesses, and for staying close until morning. Amen.
Blessing for your rest May the God of your whole life hum over you until you are asleep. May every person in your house wake rested, with a new song waiting.
