Every great ship that approaches a busy harbor does something that seems surprising: the captain, though skilled and experienced, welcomes a stranger aboard. The harbor pilot knows where the sandbars shift and where the currents curl beneath the surface. The captain has not lost authority. He has simply gained a guide who knows these waters by heart.
That is something like what Solomon invites us into. To "lean not unto thine own understanding" is not to call our minds useless or our experience worthless. It is to admit, with a smile of relief, that there are hidden things we cannot see from where we stand. And to trust with all our heart is to hand the wheel to the One who sees the whole harbor, the tides of tomorrow, and every unseen turn ahead.
The promise is lovely: acknowledge Him, and He will direct. Notice that acknowledging Him is as simple as a morning hello, a quick whisper before a decision, a thank-you in the middle of the day. You do not have to figure out everything today. You only have to keep inviting Him aboard. The One who guides is faithful, kind, and has brought countless travelers safely home. He will not run you aground. Rest your hands, lift your eyes, and let joy rise in you, because you are well guided.
