Be a Window, Not a Spotlight

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
— Matthew 5:16 (KJV)

Jesus doesn't ask us to shine so people will admire us. Read the verse again: the goal is that they "glorify your Father which is in heaven." Our good works are meant to be like a clean window. People barely notice the glass, because they are looking at what is on the other side.

That is wonderfully freeing. You don't have to perform, or keep score of who noticed your kindness. A meal left on a neighbor's porch, patience with a tired coworker, an honest word spoken gently, a quiet prayer for someone who is struggling: these are small panes of glass. When they are clear, the goodness of God comes through them.

So today, don't worry about being impressive. Simply ask God to keep the glass clean, free from pride, hurry, and the need for applause. Then do the next kind thing in front of you, and trust Him with what people see. Someone may look past your small act of love and catch a glimpse of a Father who is gracious, near, and glad to welcome them. What a joy to be even a small opening for that.

Today's prayer
Father, thank You that I get to be a small window for Your goodness today. Keep my heart clear and humble, and let every kind act point someone to You. I'm glad that the glory is Yours and the joy is shared. Amen.
