The dishwasher is still ticking as it cools, and a list on the counter has half its lines uncrossed. Let it lie there. The phone is face-down, the day's voices have drained out of the walls, and whatever is left undone will keep till morning without you.
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." — Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)
Tonight's prayer Lord, my mind has been a compass needle all day, shaking at every passing thing. Now I set it down beside the bed and let it go still. Turn it toward you, and hold it there. You promised perfect peace to the mind that is stayed on you, so I fix my thoughts on your face and not on tomorrow's calendar. I trust you with the unanswered email, the hard conversation, and the people I love, sleeping down the hall. You are north to me. You do not wobble. Keep me steady through the dark hours and wake me gently. Thank you for this day, this pillow, and your faithful hand. Amen.
Blessing for your rest Goodnight, dear one. May the Lord hold your mind steady as a stone in still water, and keep every sleeper under your roof in his perfect peace until the light comes.
