Think of a child on the morning of her birthday. A package sits on the table with her name on it. She doesn't pull out a list of chores she has done to earn it. She doesn't offer to pay. She just smiles, tears off the paper, and says thank you. That is how Paul describes salvation: "it is the gift of God."
It can be hard for us to receive this way. We are used to earning wages, paying back favors, and proving ourselves. So we quietly hold on to the idea that God's love must be deserved, and we get tired trying to deserve it. Paul lifts that weight with one gentle sentence. Grace is not a reward for our best effort. It is a gift, and the only thing a gift asks of us is open hands.
There is joy in that. When nothing is left to boast about, nothing is left to fear losing, either. A gift that was never earned can't be un-earned. In the very next verse Paul says we are God's workmanship, created for good works. Those good works are not payment. They are the thankful songs of someone who has been given everything. Today, rest in what is already yours, and let gratitude set the pace.
