Love That Waits Without Keeping Score

"Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil."
— 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 (KJV)

Paul describes love not as a feeling that sweeps over us, but as a way of walking through an ordinary day. Patient. Kind. Free of envy and showing off. Notice how many of these words are about small moments: the slow reply, the careless remark, the quiet urge to be noticed. Love is built there, in the unseen places where no one is clapping.

There is a gentle freedom in the phrase "seeketh not her own." It doesn't mean you have no needs or that your voice doesn't matter. It means you are held so securely by God that you don't have to grab for the last word, the best seat, or the credit. When you know you are already loved, you can afford to be generous. Being "not easily provoked" and thinking no evil become possible when your heart is resting rather than defending itself.

Today, choose one small place to practice. Perhaps it is extending patience to someone who is slow, assuming the best about a person who surprised you, or celebrating another's good news without comparing. You won't do it perfectly, and you don't have to. Love of this kind is first received from Christ, who was patient with you, and then passed along, one quiet kindness at a time.

Today's prayer
Father, thank you for loving me patiently and kindly long before I could love anyone back. Fill me today with that same gentle love, so I can listen well, think the best, and celebrate others with a glad heart. Let my small kindnesses be a joyful reflection of you. Amen.
