A Little Flame to Keep You Company

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."
— Psalm 119:105 (KJV)

Picture an old clay lamp, the kind people carried on evening walks long ago. Its flame was small, and it lit only a circle around the traveler. But that circle moved when they moved, and it was warm. The psalmist chose this image on purpose. God's Word is not a floodlight that blazes over the whole map. It is a light you carry close, one that walks with you.

There is real comfort in that. A lamp doesn't only warn you of rocks and holes. It also shows you the ground is solid, the path is real, and someone has gone this way before. When we open Scripture, we're often looking for a dramatic answer about the far-off future. Yet what we usually find is quiet company: a promise to hold, a word of kindness, a reminder that we are loved and not lost.

So today, pick up your lamp. Read a verse slowly over your morning coffee, or whisper it as you walk. Let it glow in your pocket and in your thoughts. You may not see the whole road, but you will see enough to keep going, and you won't be walking in the dark alone.

Today's prayer
Father, thank You for giving me a light that stays close and a Word that keeps me company. Help me carry it gladly into every room and conversation today. I trust You to light the way, and I'm so grateful to walk it with You.
