Set the Table Before the Guest Arrives

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."
— Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

Imagine a letter arrives from a dear friend: "I'm coming to see you. I'll be there by evening." You can't see the car in the driveway yet. You can't hear a knock at the door. But you believe the letter, so you clean the house, bake the bread, and set an extra place at the table. Nothing in the room has changed, yet everything in you is leaning toward joy.

That is a lovely picture of Hebrews 11:1. Faith is not wishful thinking or a hopeful guess. The word "substance" suggests something solid, like a promise you can stand on. God has written to us in His Word, and every line has proven true. So faith says, "If He said He is coming, I will get ready with gladness." The evidence of things not seen is the trustworthiness of the One who spoke.

What might it look like to set a place at the table today? Perhaps you forgive someone because God promised to mend what is broken. Perhaps you plant a dream, offer a kindness, or pray boldly for something that looks far away. Each small act of preparation says that you believe the Giver of the promise. And you will find that the waiting is not empty. His nearness fills it, and your heart can be glad long before the knock comes.

Today's prayer
Father, thank You that Your promises are firm and every word You speak is true. Help me to prepare my heart with joy and expectation, even when I cannot yet see the answer. I trust You, and I am glad to wait with You. Amen.
